Ingredients Needed

To create this delightful stir-fry, you will need:

  • Fresh prawns
  • Fish Sticks
  • Mushrooms (preferably shiitake or button mushrooms)
  • Cucumbers
  • Oyster sauce
  • Garlic
  • Ginger
  • Sesame oil
  • *OPTIONAL (Salt and pepper / Soy sauce)

These ingredients come together to form a harmonious blend of flavors that will tantalize your taste buds.

Preparation Steps

Begin by cleaning and deveining the prawns. This step is crucial to ensure the prawns are free of any impurities. Next, slice the mushrooms thinly to ensure they cook evenly and absorb the flavors of the stir-fry. For the cucumbers, slicing them into thin rounds or half-moons works best, providing a pleasant texture that complements the other ingredients.

Marinating the Prawns

A good marinade elevates the taste of prawns. For this recipe, create a marinade using soy sauce, minced garlic, and a dash of sesame oil. Allow the prawns to soak in this mixture for at least 15 minutes. This step infuses the prawns with a depth of flavor that enhances the overall dish.

Preparing the Vegetables

The mushrooms should be cleaned with a damp cloth to remove any dirt without soaking them, as mushrooms can absorb water and become soggy. Slice them uniformly for consistent cooking. For cucumbers, remove the seeds if they are large, as they can add unnecessary moisture to the stir-fry.

Cooking Equipment

Using the right equipment can make or break your stir-fry. A wok is ideal for its high sides and even heat distribution. If a wok is unavailable, a large, heavy-bottomed pan will suffice. Ensure you have a good spatula or tongs for stirring.

Stir-frying Techniques

Mastering stir-frying is all about heat management. Start with a high heat to sear the ingredients quickly, locking in their flavors and juices. Keep all ingredients within reach as stir-frying is a fast process, and you’ll need to add items in quick succession.

Cooking the Prawns

Prawns cook rapidly, so watch them closely. Sauté them just until they turn pink and opaque. Overcooking prawns can result in a rubbery texture, which is undesirable.

Stir-frying the Vegetables

Begin with the mushrooms, as they take a bit longer to cook. Sauté until they release their moisture and start to brown. Add the cucumbers last to maintain their crunch. Stir constantly to ensure even cooking and prevent burning.

Combining the Ingredients

Once the vegetables are cooked, return the prawns to the wok. Stir everything together, allowing the flavors to meld. Add soy sauce, oyster sauce, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed.

Final Touches

To finish, drizzle a bit of sesame oil for a nutty aroma. Garnish with freshly chopped green onions or cilantro. This not only adds color but also enhances the dish’s flavor profile.

Serving Suggestions

This stir-fry pairs wonderfully with steamed jasmine rice or noodles. For an added touch, serve with a side of pickled vegetables or a simple green salad. When plating, consider using a shallow bowl to showcase the vibrant colors and textures of the stir-fry.

Enjoy your homemade mushroom prawn and cucumber stir-fry, a dish that promises a delightful culinary experience with every bite.
